What challenge inspired this recipe?
Time has proved that the insurance the volunteers are provided with may somewhat be confusing for them to handle. It is especially true when the volunteers are entitled to the EHIC card and they have to navigate the national health system before even getting to the part where they have to ask a reimbursement to Henner.
That is why we take a specific amount of time and energy to explain this to them. Indeed, the list of the different times when we talk about this aspect is long:
– We send them the guide once they are selected;
– They talk about it with their sending organisation during the prep meeting;
– They have access at all time to the guide through their insurance account;
– We explain the way the insurance and national healthcare system works;
– We send them a written email explaining what has to be done to have them properly registered in the national healthcare system…
Time and experience has proven that it was sometimes not enough. Indeed, these information tends to be discarded until there is an actual need for healthcare.
That is why we also talk about the insurance during our Get Together weekend and that we adopted a “funnier” way to approach the topic: an Escape Game.
Ingredients :
National healthcare form (if applicable), fake doctor’s precriptions, stickers, fake medical certificates, Cigna/Henner guides (2), whatever material which can illustrate your national healthcare system
People to impersonate different roles : the Henner company (better to be two people) ; the doctor ; the national healthcare system ; the specialists (one person impersonate all the specialists’ roles)
Step by step guide
Each participant receives a card and some fake cash at the beginning of the game. On this card is written that the volunteer just arrived on their volunteering project and they are facing a situation in which they have to accomplish some steps in order to file their claim and receive reimbursement.
They have people to visit, and documents giving them informations. They have to find the correct way to get their money back.
When they go to the doctor or the specialist, they give some of their money.
When they ask for a reimbursement to the national healthcare, they receive some money
When they ask a reimbursement to Henner, they receive some money.
Important to highlight!This game is an opportunity to get as close as possible to the reality. It helps the volunteers to better understand how the system works while avoiding a very long and boring plenary interaction. Once the game is over, some time has to be dedicated for the questions they might have, to remind them about the written email they received and to which they can get back at any time in case they would need it. Whenever possible, it is also an option to give them a situation they might be really facing during their projects: rather give a broken glasses situation to someone who has glasses, and the orthodontic check to someone with dental braces for example. |
Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
This escape game has to be adapted to the national reality. It was conceived in Belgium, which has an incredibly complicated national healthcare system, at the time where some volunteers were still on CIGNA, and others on HENNER.
It therefore requires some preparation and adaptation before being used the first time.
