What challenge inspired this recipe?
Another part of the ESC project which is hard to finance is to provide all the tools and equipment for the volunteers who are working on a daily basis on the field. While working we kids need a huge variety of equipment to deliver the session which can be very pricey in dedicated shops. We came up with the idea of creating our own tools for the session if it is feasible. With this method luckily we cut around 50 percent of our expenses on tools and we only buy the things which we cannot produce: pens, pencils, flipchart papers etc.
This method is also a good way to upcycle and recycle many things which are in the house of the volunteers but not used anymore or would be thrown away.
Ingredients :
For this for sure you would need time, some DIY and sewing skills, DIY equipment.
Step by step guide
When we are planning sessions, gathering materials is a must have step. So we can see what we need to deliver sessions, which games we play very frequently and there is a lot of damage in the tools. So we do not create a separate session or day for this we start working on it when it is needed. We have 2 ways as well to to be more cost effective with the equipments:
- we can create them: card games, juggling ball, pencil case, bean bag, cooperation parachute
- we can replace one tool with another using collected things in the house – wc paper roll, bottlecaps, forceps , broken furniture pieces, used flipchart paper, used carpet
Once we find out the best methods to use we start creating the tools and equipment together and start working on it.
Important to highlight! We think this practice is a great success because: -volunteers learn about upcycling and recycling – it develops their creativity on how can we use small things to create a set of games , or even designing a set of cards or board game with illustrations – we cut the cost what we spend on materials – it is also a great team building activity since everyone is involved – everybody is more careful while using tools This event can be more regular and attached with a workshop |
Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
It can be too time consuming.
