What challenge inspired this recipe?

This topic was brought up by one of our long term volunteers, saying that the host organization didn’t explain enough how trash separation works in Finland. The trash separation systems in Europe vary a lot, hence it is important to consider the local conditions and give enough instructions regarding this aspect to support sustainable practices.

Step by step guide

For many volunteers, a sustainable lifestyle is a very important aspect of their volunteering project, so it is important to make sure that the volunteers are aware of trash separation. To make it easy for them, we could organize training sessions and workshops to educate volunteers about proper trash separation techniques as well as teach them about the different types of waste and how to classify and segregate them effectively. You can also develop clear infographics that volunteers can refer to while separating trash. Make these materials readily available at the trash separation locations. Providing the necessary equipment and tools, such as recycling bins, composting bins, and trash bags for the separation process is also necessary.

Important to highlight!

To conclude, promoting trash separation guidelines can promote sustainable practices among volunteers. This practice could be upscaled by sharing the guidelines with more hosting organizations who could then share them among their volunteers, as the topic is quite universal.

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

One of the main challenges is the lack of awareness and understanding among volunteers about the importance of trash separation and its environmental benefits.
Encouraging volunteering to change their waste disposal habits and adopt new practices can be challenging. It may take time and effort to promote the adoption of proper trash separation techniques in some areas, space constraints might hinder the placement of multiple recycling and composting bins.
Finding suitable locations for these bins can be a challenge as well as getting everyone in the community to participate and cooperate in the trash separation program can be difficult.
