What challenge inspired this recipe?

It is observed by our network that volunteers are facing much more psychological challenges than some years ago. These psychological challenges can concern any volunteer, even though they may affect some volunteers in particular, for example volunteers who are leaving their country because of specific socio-economic situations.

These volunteers need a close follow-up concerning their mental health, though the volunteer’s referent does not have enough time to provide it. Also, the need of the volunteer can go beyond the support that the organization can provide.

Step by step guide

  1. Having a referent in the house
The network observed that having a volunteering team which mixes different profiles can help to have different roles naturally distributed in the group. In general, a more responsible or sensitive volunteer can be identified after some time, who is able to evaluate how the others are feeling in the group. The organization can rely on this person in order to work on the follow-up of each individual.
  2. Having a network outside the house
Volunteers with serious issues will need professional care. The organization has to work on developing a network of partners who can attend the volunteers when needed.

Important to highlight!

The care to volunteers also depend on how easy is the management of the ESC insurance. Specific development of psychological follow-up is needed.

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

Relying on a volunteer to act like a referent can also be felt as a emotional load for the volunteer.
