What challenge inspired this recipe?
When you are facing a difficulty related to mental or physical health, it’s sometimes difficult to find all the information and contacts you need (for yourself or to redirect the information).
A ‘health folder’ can be put in the volunteers house, for them to have contacts in case of emergency, but also to look at it regarding other deeper issues they may have.
Ingredients :
A plastified folder, that has to stay in the volunteers’ house. It has to be updated regularly.
A pdf version can also be emailed to the volunteers.
Step by step guide
The tutor and the team from the hosting organization can create a folder with :
– local emergency call numbers;
– contact of English speaking doctors;
– contact of hospitals, health centers;
– hotlines for different topics (mental health, suicide prevention, victims of abuses, abortion information …);
– contacts of psychological centers and local psychologists who can give consultations in English or another language etc.
Important to highlight!The ‘health folder’ not only facilitates access to help, but also reassure tutors, and allows volunteers to feel less lonely with their issues. For example, leaving information on abortion, support for people who have suffered abuse etc. can lead to a conversation about it, and maybe go further on the support provided. |
Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
It can take a bit of time to gather all the information, and to translate it.
Also, some phone number or website can be only in the local language, and this doesn’t’ facilitate access to the information/help. It can maybe encourage the volunteer to look at similar support in their own country.
