What challenge inspired this recipe?
Learning a new language is difficult. As organizations we try very hard to find good tools for language learning even though finding a good opportunity to practice it could be just as important. Yes, your volunteers can always speak with you in the office, at the grocery store but maybe they need a more supportive environment where they feel safer to chat with others. Hence, the language café! It is also a good opportunity to mingle and meet new people.

Step by step guide
Many communities now host language cafés, especially in bigger cities, aimed to facilitate the language exchange for locals as well as meeting new people for many expats living there. Search on Facebook, Instagram or on the web if there are any groups nearby you. Those meeting usually happen once a week, they are free to participate (usually in a bar or center and you maybe pay for drinks). and there are tables with different languages. Then, on one hand, you can feel support practicing the language of your project as well on the other hand being a native speaker on the table where others are trying to learn languages you already know!
Important to highlight! As part of your personal project, you can create your own language café! Organize a community event where you would share your language and culture and others will too! It’s a great way to meet the locals! |
Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
Maybe there are no language cafés around or language exchange groups. Try to find them in a nearby city or use apps like Tandem or similar that are more accessible.
