What challenge inspired this recipe?
This best practice came from the evaluation of our mentoring system in our ESC program. For more years we tried different ways and none of them seem to be working neither us nor the volunteers.
Based on that we came up with the idea to provide different mentoring ways and ask the volunteers what type of support is the best for them. For that we created a mentoring questionnaire and we have a pool of mentors who are best fitting for certain roles.
Ingredients :
Some online tool to create the questionnaire.
Step by step guide
We created a questionnaire which you can also find attached in which we map the overall interest of the volunteers and what describes them the most. After this part we ask them what fields do they wanna develop the most ( 5 options). We asked those specific questions because our mentors have their “superpowers” in those fields and can support them in the best way. We also ask from the mentors about their profile previously.
Once the mentoring questionnaire is filled out the coordinator matches the profile of the volunteer and mentor.
We set them the first appointment which is a “chemistry check” to see if both parties are ok with the choice. If it is a yes they start working together for the rest of the months. If it is a no from any party we do a match making again and follow the above mentioned procedure.
Here is the example of the questionnaire: https://form.jotform.com/egyesek/mentoring-needs-questionnaire
Important to highlight! We think this practice is a great success in the life of the organisation:

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
This method can be used and modified based on what type of mentoring you provide for the volunteers.
