What challenge inspired this recipe?

This topic was brought up by some long-term volunteers, who shared that they don’t know how the Finnish health system works and that more information about that upon arrival or while they arrived in Finland would have been very helpful. Hence, we added an info page about this topic to help the volunteer navigate the Finnish health care system.

Step by step guide

Prepare written materials in simple language that explain the basics of health insurance in the host country. Use clear headings, bullet points, and visuals to make the information more accessible and easy to grasp. If the volunteers are from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, explain how they can use the European Health Insurance Card during their stay in the host country and how to access medical care with it.

If the volunteers are required to register with the local social security system to be eligible for healthcare benefits, guide them through the registration process and provide any necessary forms or documents.

Important to highlight!

Informing volunteers about health insurance in the local country is a critical step in ensuring their well-being and access to healthcare services during their stay in the country. The provision of clear and accessible information, addressing potential challenges, and promoting understanding of the healthcare system can significantly enhance volunteers’ overall experience and safety.

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

Volunteers from different countries may have varying levels of proficiency in the local language or English. Language barriers can hinder effective communication and understanding of complex health insurance terms. Health insurance can be a complex topic, and volunteers may feel overwhelmed with the amount of information presented to them during the orientation or information session. Some volunteers are not eligible for the EHIC card, so it can be difficult for even the coordinators to get proper instructions for the Henner insurance.
