What challenge inspired this recipe?
This topic was shared by our volunteers during the monthly meeting. Volunteers have different accommodations and despite all volunteers have their own room, not in all apartments there were common spaces in addition to the kitchen, which can sometimes be rather small. Hence, we discussed the importance of having common spaces (like a living room), where the volunteers can spend time together.
According to volunteers, living together in a flat where you have separate rooms but share common spaces can be a wonderful experience if everyone practices good communication, respect, and consideration for one another. This type of living allows volunteers to bond quickly but also have private space.

However, it could be important to consider for example when deciding on a rental apartment if the accommodation has not only private rooms for the volunteers, but also some common space where the volunteers can easily spend time together.

Implementing this best practice varies a lot depending on the local context. For example, in bigger cities where the rents are high, it may be impossible to find accommodation that fits within the budget that has enough space. In many cities (for example in Helsinki), living rooms are turned into a private room so that the apartment would fit more tenants, erasing the common space from the apartment altogether. On the contrary, in rural areas there may be less supply of rental apartments, making choosing this type of apartment more difficult if there are limited apartments available.
Moreover, it can happen that the volunteers don’t get along well due their different lifestyles or cleaning habits despite having enough space within the apartment.
