What challenge inspired this recipe?
When volunteers start living in a new apartment, there are many different utensils needed, such as laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, soaps, toilet paper, etc. We realized that buying these items in the beginning of their volunteering may create high costs for the volunteers compared to their budget, hence, we find it helpful for them to reimburse the costs of household utensils in the beginning as these items often last a long time.

Step by step guide
Ask the volunteer to make a shopping list of different household utensils that are needed at the apartment and provide a maximum budget to use for these purchases.
Depending on the local context, the volunteer and their mentor/coordinator of the project can then go to the store together, use an online purchasing application/website to purchase the goods, or the volunteer can go to the store independently to purchase what is needed, and the costs will then be reimbursed afterwards based on the receipt.

Disagreements of the budget or what are considered necessary household items. Sometimes it may be difficult to find the time to go purchase these items together. Volunteers may have struggles when creating the shopping list, if most items and/or store websites are only available in the local language that the volunteer is not yet proficient in.
