What challenge inspired this recipe?

We’ve experienced that often things get broken in the accommodations of the volunteers and there’s not always budget to fix it. We are therefore trying to motivate participants to try to repair the things themselves in the spirit of sustainability and gaining new skills.

Ingredients :

For this practice it would be good to collaborate with organizations/shops in your local community.

Step by step guide

  • Research local repair cafés / self-repair groups / initiatives/ services/ repair festivals
  • If no local offers are available, alternatively search for resources online
  • Pass the information to the volunteers and motivate them to participate (arguments: it will be fixed quicker, they might learn a new skill, become more independent, can get to know new people at the repair events, sustainability, …)

Important to highlight!

To help motivating participants it might need a goodie system or some additional motivators apart from the above mentioned arguments. It might help to organize a workshop for all participants in the beginning for basic repair skills, so that they feel more ready to apply these skills themselves throughout the project period.
