What challenge inspired this recipe?
Many people and companies are wasting food. Supermarkets or restaurants are throwing away food which will expire soon. However the dates of expiration are usually overestimated so the expired food is usually good. As ESC volunteers have quite a tight budget for groceries, they can use this to their advantage and lower the wastage at the same time.
Ingredients :
Gather information about the local realities on selling soon to expire products.
Step by step guide
Find organizations in your area, which is taking soon-to-expire/expired food and selling it at a low price/giving it for free and start a cooperation.
Have a discussion with your volunteers about food waste and how to cut it down.
We have a cooperation with an organization participating in a food waste shortage. Also our volunteers found their own organizations which are giving away free expired food.
There are also stores in Finland that sell products that would otherwise go to waste with a discounted price (for example due to overproduction or a wrong label in the package). This option is also worth exploring in other countries.
Important to highlight! To conclude, this best practice is great not only for limiting food waste, but also for the volunteers to find more ways for affordable food. |
Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
Depending on the area, there may be no organizations or supermarkets working for this cause.
