What challenge inspired this recipe?

One of the great ways to share our culture and to get to know others is food. Having roommates can be an enlighten experience where you can see not only what kind of food people eat in different countries but also how tastes and preferences vary from one person to another.

Ingredients :

Try to find good recipes from your home, and have a joint agreement that each can contribute each week with a small amount of money to cover the cost of ingredients.

Step by step guide

If you live with a group of people, suggest them that once a week, or a month ( First Monday of each month or every Thursday for example) can be a cooking night, where each of you can share their countries most famous dish, some other time your favorite dish, another idea is to share your favorite childhood snack. The idea list could be endless because it can be deserts, sour, snacks, drinks…

The important thing to note is that you involve your roommates. They could cook with your instructions or let them help you in preparation. During the meal you can have a cultural exchange to connect with them. You can ask them about similar dishes in their country, whether there is an ingredient they don’t like there, what is your favorite drink.

These insights can also bond you to get to know your roommates better.

Important to highlight!

One of the biggest benefits of your volunteering experiences is being able to share your culture and this is a big part of it.

You can expand this idea, or if you are not a big foodie, similar events can be organized as movie nights or themed parties with different movies and music from countries. Books are also a great way to learn about someone’s culture and if you are a book fan a book club could be fun to try!

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

  • allergies
  • could be that some ingredients are hard to find
  • expensive to do

One of the solutions to all of this is to experiment and try to make the recipes using different ingredients. You will just be culturally richer then!
