What challenge inspired this recipe?

One of the tools for slowing climate change is lowering our carbon footprint. We can lower the footprint by choosing the type of transportation. Volunteers should be encouraged to choose more sustainable types of transportation to their projects.

Ingredients :

Allianssi Youth Exchange’s web section on sustainable participation: https://www.nuorisovaihto.fi/allianssi-youth-exchanges/sustainable-participation/

Step by step guide

Provide the volunteers with access to Allianssi Youth Exchanges website, where there is a section dedicated to green travel.

During a pre-departure meeting emphasize the impact of various types of transportation.
Use stories of volunteers who took longer journeys without flying. Encourage those volunteers to share their stories or even provide counsel.

Provide additional resources to the topic – accessible also from Allianssi youth Exchanges’ website.

Important to highlight!

Traveling by land is beneficial for the environment. Many volunteers may not consider other transportation options besides flying, if they don’t have enough information about this topic. Some of them may want to travel more sustainably but they don’t know where to look for information. At an informative website volunteers will get the idea of sustainable travel and will learn how to plan it.

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

Low budget for travel reimbursement, the journey can take many days and hence not fit into the required traveling days for the travel reimbursement. Many volunteers may find it too time consuming or difficult to plan their journey, poor transportation in some countries. Moreover, the location of the project really impacts this, for example Finland is a lot more difficult to reach through green travel compared to countries in Central Europe.
