What challenge inspired this recipe?

We started renting a house for the volunteers which was almost not all furnished and being in the best condition. With money what we usually get for hosting the volunteers was quite limited to furnish the house as it should be. We also realized that despite the rules of the house it was hard for the volunteers to keep as it is or add something to it because of lacking skills doing so or waiting for improvements from the side of the organization. We also thought that the event can also serve as a great team building method. So we came up with the idea to combine these 3 elements and come up with a monthly event.

Ingredients :

Depending on the work what you would like to do you would need more equipment – paint, gardening tools, seeds, furniture, drilling machine, screws etc.

Step by step guide

The house is almost totally furnished with old furniture which were mainly collected by the local youth workers or from different donations and there were still some lacking. Usually at the beginning of the month we collect what we need to do and what ideas we have to make the house nicer. After we select a Monday where we work together for half a day. We also create a shopping list if it is needed so in the preparation we get the necessary tools or equipment.

The day also contains a small workshop on how to use tools, different techniques and afterwork

As for the fun part, we listen to music while (there is a selected DJ) and we cook something together so after the hard work we can also enjoy ourselves.

Areas of work:

  • painting decoration on the whole to hide the less nice parts;
  • planning on how to create a cozy living room, cinema room;
  • painting doors, tables, chairs on selected colors;
  • designing and creating garden furniture together;
  • putting up shelves, creating KALLAX shelves from recycled materials;
  • gardening and harvesting;

Important to highlight!

We think it is a very successful practice because:

  • when something goes wrong next time the volunteers are able to handle it and maintenance of the house is also easier;
  • when they work for long hours on the housing they also pay more care;
  • while working together enhances also the teamwork competences;
  • nice way to connect with volunteers, youth workers, coordinator;

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…

If no modifications in the house are allowed it is quite hard to create days like this but there still can be some brainstorming on the interior design of the house to make it more cozy.
