What challenge inspired this recipe?
This best practice is used for more +5 years at Egyesek in the management of long term volunteers. This practice gives the opportunity to start the week altogether who are working on project, prepare for the week and also give the space the volunteers to discuss all matters what concerning them and the project. This is a day that we dedicate fully to ourselves, provide and discuss everything that is waiting for us for the week. Since Egyesek has 3 headquarters it is also very important that we communicate about the events which are happening elsewhere in the life of the association which creates more welcoming space for the volunteers in the life of the association
Ingredients :
This session can be lead without any extra material but we use different tools for the how are you round and sometimes allocate some budget for common cooking.
Step by step guide
The weekly kick off meeting is a full day Monday activity where all the volunteers and youth workers are present. The meeting is led by the youth workers and project coordinator. It contains the following parts:
- how are you round – everyone shares how we are or what we are looking for this week, how was the weekend;
- talking about the weekly plan and setting, extraordinary events and other Egyesek related news;
- topics of the volunteer – asking for day off, sharing successes and difficulties, matters of the house etc;
- preparation of the week together;
- informal time together – common breakfast or lunch , coffee or cooking;
Important to highlight!We consider this practice as a success for many reasons:

Before you start cooking, keep in mind…
It really depends on the working schedule of the volunteers if you can have a full day activity like this. It also depends if the volunteers need long hours of preparation to deliver their tasks with the youth workers. For an alternative you can simply go with 1-2 hours sessions about weekly planning, sharing news and let volunteers to share their thoughts.
