What challenge inspired this recipe?

During the volunteering journey there are many fields where the volunteers need to get integrated – home, work, organization , local community. One of the most important is to create a safe place for the volunteers while living together from the very beginning. It is also important in case of conflict resolution. When we are creating house rules, rules on how we work together we always have a small session on the needs of the volunteer, what makes them safe in the given setting..

Step by step guide

This is a shorter workshop that we use while on-boarding, creating rules or resolving conflicts. Once the topic is introduced as a first step we ask the volunteers to answer the question what makes them feel safe or what is important for them to keep in a certain setting. We give the volunteers some time to think about it and write it on a post. Once the collection is done everyone is presenting their points and gives a shorter explanation.

After that we collect everything and we agree that we pay attention to those points during the process.

Example in case of conflict resolution – I cannot stand raising our voices, share messages without consent of the others

In case of creating house rules – i like when you knock on the door before entering.

Important to highlight!

We think it is successful – everyone has the possibility to co-create a safe space and express the need. It is also easier to go through a process since it is in everyone’s interest to keep these common standards.

So far we only used it for creating common rules and in cases of conflict resolution.
